What this calculator compares
Annual electricity cost = watts ÷ 1,000 × hours per day × pump-use days per year × electricity rate. The calculator runs that equation for both schedules, then subtracts the variable-speed cost from the current-pump cost.
Payback uses the net upgrade cost after the rebate divided by annual electricity savings. The 10-year figure is electricity savings over ten years minus the net upgrade cost. It does not assume maintenance, financing, future electricity-rate changes or a specific pump lifespan.
Why wattage matters more than horsepower
Horsepower is not your electric bill. For the strongest estimate, use measured watts from the pump display, manufacturer performance data at the actual programmed speed, or another reliable power measurement. A variable-speed pump may run longer while still using fewer kWh because lower-speed operation can sharply reduce power demand.
This calculator does not automatically apply the pump-affinity cube law to invent a new pump wattage. Real power draw depends on the pump, speed, plumbing resistance and operating point. Enter the wattage you actually expect the variable-speed schedule to average.
